On September 5, 2002, the National Academy of Sciences' Food and Nutrition Board released a report, The Dietary Reference Intakes for Energy, Carbohydrates, Fiber, Fat, Protein and Amino Acids (Macronutrients), that established Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for macronutrients, including energy, carbohydrates, fiber, fat, fatty acids, protein, and amino acids. DRIs are a group of four reference values that can be calculated to determine recommended nutrient intakes for the prevention of nutrient deficiency and chronic disease.
This report is the latest edition within the DRI series. Other reports are available on calcium, folate and other B-vitamins, antioxidants, micronutrients, and applications in dietary assessment. Future projects include DRIs for electrolytes and water, bioactive compounds, and the role of alcohol in health and disease.
